We made it safely to our destination on our first day of our vacation. We managed to leave by 8:30 and then again at 9:00 because as we were on the South Side of Eau Claire, we remembered that neither of us had turned the air conditioning up-sooo back we had to go.
We found out that it is 15 miles to go all the way around Eau Claire by way of North Crossing, Hwy 53, and Clairemont Avenue.
It seems like everyone is on vacation. We stopped by the Dells for a bathroom break and it was crazy at the gas station. We stopped at the Flying J in South Beloit to get gas and that was crazy! Then we got into Chicago and the traffic was bumper to bumper and stop and go from O'Hare to the Skyway-Lindy loved it!
So then we got to Gary, Indiana and Lindy had to pee (again!) and I needed to eat something. A cop had gone screaming past us and sure enough there was an accident on the freeway, so we got off on the exit figuring any of them would have a gas station. I thought we were in Cairo, Illinois or Jackson, Mississippi. Scary! Anyway, we stopped at this gas station, but there were no bathrooms. The guy behind the glass and bars said there was one at the restaurant next door. OK, so we go there. The bathroom was locked and the girl at the counter said the manager has the key. But we could go to Miller K Grocery Store and they would have a bathroom there. Well, they did, only there was a sign that said it was out of order even though it wasn't. So Lindy had her relief and I got some ham and cheese and we got the hell out of Gary! We found our hotel in Michigan City-the Blue Chip Casino and hotel. It is a very nice room with a view of Lake Michigan and we think a nuclear power plant.
We went to another casino-the Four Winds up the road a ways and back in the woods. It was very nice but had crappy games. So we went back to our Casino. It was smaller, but had a nicer atmosphere. Naturally, we had to eat at the buffet and it was actually very good. It featured barbecue-ribs, brisket, pork chops, along with a ton of other stuff and some of the best bread pudding and caramel sauce that I have had. On our way back to our room, a live band was playing called Visions of Santana. They were awesome. The best part was all of these old people getting into it and dancing and shaking their bootys. There was this one old guy who talking to us and shaking around. All of a sudden there he was again in his Hoveround!
Sorry-no picture-camera was in the room :-(
So that was our first day. I'm not sure if we can stand too much more excitement or I might have to have a pump put in my heart like Dick Cheney! Tomorrow we're off to Detroit.
Reminds me of once when I took a wrong turn in Rockford, IL, while driving my dad's ghetto cruiser, his 1976 Olds Ninety-Eight, complete with an AM radio.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you two are having fun! I'll be looking forward to the next installment.
Yikes...anything within 50 miles of Chicago is scary!! Did you grab a guitar and sit in with the Santana cover band?
ReplyDeleteOMG! My Dad had a ghetto cruiser too! It was white with red velvet seats. My Sissy and I would make my Mom drop us off a block from school so the other kids wouldn't see us in it! Drive safe and drink lots.
